Increasing numbers of select students apply for admission to Boston College through the late 1970s. The freshman class of 1977, for example, with 2,150 members, is chosen from among 11,400 applicants, while the entering classes of 1978 and 1979 draw more than 12,500 applicants each. Academic quality of these classes is consistently distinguished; more than half the applicants rank in the top 10 percent of their high school class.
