Biography
Michaila Peters is a third year PhD Candidate and Teaching Fellow in Philosophy at Boston College. Her research works to understand the relationship between rural decline and polarization in American politics order to support policy and community-based solutions. She is especially interested in applying Jane Addams' account of peaceweaving, which views peace not as a negative concept, or the absence of war, but rather as a project of cultivating what MLK calls "positive liberties," strengthening both the social fabric and its relationship to institutions through mutual recognition in sympathetic understanding.
As part of her commitment to a philosophical method of praxis, Peters founded and leads the Public Philosophy Initiative at Boston College. As part of this initiative, she facilitates a weekly workshop to empower graduate students will technical skills that will encourage their development of careers aimed at applying philosophical analysis to real-world problem solving.
Peters received her B.A. in 2021 from the American University School of Public Affairs Honors Program in Political Science and Philosophy with a focus in Political Theory and Community-Based Research. She also studied philosophy at the University of Toronto as a Fulbright Killam Fellow in 2021.
