I specialize in 19th century continental philosophy, with a special emphasis on Søren Kierkegaard and Friedrich Nietzsche. My areas of competence include ancient philosophy (particularly Plato) and German idealism. I am concerned primarily with questions of the value and meaning of philosophy as a discipline, the relation between philosophy and education, and the engagement of philosophy with bordering disciplines like art and religion. Additional figures of special interest include Spinoza, Gilles Deleuze, and Leo Strauss. Outside of the academy I play music, enjoy the outdoors, and galumphing about with my dog, Lyra.
