This series of courses is designed to provide interested healthcare workers with basic conversational Spanish skills targeted toward the types of interactions that take place in a clinical setting . The requirements to earn a certificate are three seven-week courses which build the clinician's knowledge and confidence in speaking Spanish from a beginner's level to a proficient level. (An optional introductory course is also offered for those with little or no background in Spanish.)
Classes are held weekly in the evening live online via Zoom. Practice homework will require 1-3 hours per week.
Two books are required for these classes. They are used throughout the three classes required for the certificate (as well as the optional Introduction course). The books must be purchased in advance for use during the first class session.

Clinical Spanish - Introduction (for beginners)
This course is designed for providers with no formal background or very little knowledge of Spanish who would like to apply new Spanish skills in the clinical setting. It is a first course in Spanish progressively merging the very basic grammatical structures needed to communicate in Spanish with a health care terminology based on cognates, verbs, adjectives, and other words and expressions.
In this course, clinicians will learn parts of the body, numbers, the alphabet, articles, gender and number agreement, clinical vocabulary, the most basic common expressions: “greetings’ and ‘farewells” applied in conversations through formulation of questions and answers and role play dialogue. General focus is a simple conversational Spanish based on learning the present tense of regular and some irregular verbs, prepositions a, de.
This course will help prepare those who are interested in pursuing the Clinical Spanish Certificate.
Intended Learning Outcomes
Following this course, students will be able to:
- demonstrate Spanish proficiency at an introductory level using very basic grammatical structures and vocabulary along with familiar cognate words and expressions.
- implement new vocabulary, including parts of the body, numbers, the alphabet and frequently used medical terms.

Clinical Spanish I (for beginners)
The first course in the series is designed for clinicians who already have a basic knowledge of Spanish, who would like to apply their Spanish in the clinical setting. Lessons progressively merge grammar and health care terminology in the context of various clinical settings. We will be focusing on dialogues, readings, cases, situations and cultural notes. This course provides a foundation of knowledge and experience to the health care provider who wants to learn Spanish to facilitate a better communication with the growing monolingual Hispanic community in the United States.
Intended Learning Outcomes
Following this course, students will be able to:
- demonstrate Spanish proficiency at an introductory level using very basic grammatical structures and vocabulary along with familiar cognate words and expressions.
- implement new vocabulary, including parts of the body, numbers, the alphabet and frequently used medical terms.

Clinical Spanish II
This second class in the Clinical Spanish Certificate series is conducted almost exclusively in Spanish with a continued emphasis on conversation. Topics of grammar will include the preterite tense of regular, irregular and stem-changing verbs, object pronouns and the special construction with gustar, doler and hacer, reflexive verbs, prepositions por and para, and the imperfect vs. preterite tenses. We will focus more on clinical terminology and the application of language to patient care, family planning, and dealing with various health emergencies with a focus on listening and reading comprehension. Providers will be taught common terms used in the clinical setting as well as phrases and commands used during a physical assessment. There will also be more cultural notes to introduce as topics of conversation.
Intended Learning Outcomes
Following this course, students will be able to:
- demonstrate proficiency in Spanish at a more advanced level, using the correct pronunciation of the words most commonly used by patients and health care professionals.
- implement in conversation a greatly expanded vocabulary of words and expressions used in healthcare.
- construct questions and responses during role-playing dialogs.

Clinical Spanish III
This final class in the Clinical Spanish series will be conducted only in Spanish. It is designed to serve health care professionals who seek high conversational skills in Spanish. Topics of grammar include: present and past perfect tenses, future and conditional tenses, and all the forms of the subjunctive mood. It presents everyday situations that health care students, pre-professionals, and professionals may encounter at work settings such as hospitals, emergency rooms, laboratories, and clinics when dealing with Spanish speaking patients and personnel in the United States. Clinicians learn through role-playing how to communicate and give instructions about very important health issues, from AIDS to drugs and drug addiction. Also, there will be readings and discussions on various Hispanic cultural topics.
Intended Learning Outcomes
Following this course, students will be able to:
- speak at the proficient level, using the correct pronunciation of words most commonly used by patients and health care professionals.
- implement a format for taking a patient’s history and performing a physical examination, which will be easy to follow when actually dealing with patients.
- answer patient questions at a high level of proficiency.
