SYNOPSIS:
Molière's comedic satire of the hypocrisies in French aristocratic society receives an amusing and revealing twist with our gender-swapped production. The story follows Alceste, disheartened by the vain flattery and deceitfulness of his fellow men, who declares that henceforth he will speak only the truth—no matter what offense this might give. Ironically, Alceste is enamored of the young widow Celimene, whose malicious tongue and unceasing coquetry make her the embodiment of the very situation he professes to detest. When Alceste insults a sonnet written by a powerful noble, he is called to stand trial. Refusing to dole out false compliments, he is charged and humiliated, and resolves with self-imposed exile.
Special Event: Immediately following the performance on Wednesday, November 16, 2016 there will be a panel discussion on "Gender Parity in Theatre" with Director/Dramaturg, Dr. Theresa Lang, Monan Professor in Theatre Arts and Playwright, Sheri Wilner, and StageSource Executive Director, Julie Hennrikus. The panel is free to attend, open to all, and will take place in the Robsham Mainstage theater.
