This project seeks to extend the results of two previous studies (Bruce & Conlon, 2005; Bruce, Randall, & Birge, 2008) by revisiting the case of a now 21 year-old young man who is congenitally deafblind, born at 24 weeks gestational age. This study provides a rare opportunity to create a longitudinal case that captures the communication, language, and literacy development of one learner over a period of more than 15 years. This study will extend the findings regarding effective instructional strategies that supported this learner at various stages of development. The study includes an examination of his written educational plans, videotaped lesson observations (across different settings and instructors), literacy artifacts, and interviews of the learner, mother, classroom teacher, and others who have supported his literacy development. This study also provides the unique opportunity to look at the application of assistive technologies to support literacy in a young adult learner.
This project is a longitudinal case study of a learner who is deafblind.
A systematic approach to thematic analysis will be applied in this qualitative study.
