Project Summary

This project follows 135 Black and Latinx adults who participated as youth in a NASA-sponsored program, the Institute for Climate and Planets. Housed at the Goddard Institute for Space Studies, ICP involved students and high school teachers in the Goddard scientists' research teams.

Approach

This project was distinguished by a strengths-based, life-span approach to understanding BIPOC individuals' careers in STEM.

Key Findings

  • Comprehensive, cohort-based, apprenticeship model highly effective professional development for underrepresented youth
  • Relationships among peers of color and between students and elite scientists key program component
  • Outcomes of participation include heightened confidence, self-efficacy, educational and professional aspirations, and commitment to meaningful work
