UHS nurse Caroline Faherty, R.N. (seen above) has completed three trips to Guatemala along with Director Thomas I. Nary, MD, who for 10 years has led the Boston College Brigade of Timmy Global Health Brigade. "The impact of this 3,415-mile trip is an experience that leaves us feeling so grateful to Boston College for providing this experience to our community of students and staff," says Caroline. "As we returned to campus the people of Guatemala have left a lasting imprint on our hearts. Our lives are better for having been part of theirs."
Timmy Global Health is a non-profit group that expands access to healthcare and empowers students and volunteers to tackle today's most pressing global health challenges. Based in Quetzaltenango (known colloquially as Xela), which is two and half hours north of Guatemala City, volunteers treat patients in makeshift clinics in surrounding communities. The group provides medical care to over 400 patients with diagnoses such as gastritis, diabetes, and hypertension. Program participants also work directly with Guatemalan physicians who can follow up with the patients.
