Julia is a PhD candidate in English Literature, with a focus on 20th and 21st century American literature, particularly African-American literature, indigenous literature, and ecocriticism. Her work combines her interest in sociology/social justice and other cultural institutions with literature; for example, her Master's research project looked at the intersection of the writings of Frederick Douglass with the artistic representations of him done by Harlem Renaissance painter Jacob Lawrence, and their respective sociological contexts in the abolitionist and Civil Rights movements.
Julia holds a B.S. in Sociology and Education from Cornell University, and an M.A. in English from the Bread Loaf School of English at Middlebury College. Before coming to Boston College for her PhD, Julia worked for nine years as a high school English teacher in Boston-area schools, most recently at Chapel Hill-Chauncy Hall Independent School in Waltham, MA where she taught 11th grade American Literature and 12th grade English electives in Social Justice Literature and Creative Writing.
