Gregory Kalscheur, SJ, an associate professor in the Law School, will take on a new set of responsibilities at Boston College this summer when he becomes senior associate dean for strategic planning and faculty development in the College of Arts and Sciences.
In his new post, which he will assume in August, Fr. Kalscheur will assist in reviewing A&S academic programs and in the school’s faculty hiring process. A major facet of his job as senior associate dean, according to A&S Dean David Quigley, will be to promote conversations in the school on faculty engagement with the University’s intellectual, spiritual and formational mission.
“I’m very excited for the opportunity to work with Dean Quigley and the A&S faculty to help provide our students with a rich liberal arts education in the Jesuit, Catholic tradition,” said Fr. Kalscheur, who joined the Law School faculty in 2003.
Fr. Kalscheur, who will continue to teach a course in civil procedure at BC Law, says his job as A&S senior associate dean represents a “natural evolution” in his vocation and academic career.
“Undergraduate liberal arts is at the heart of the Jesuit educational mission,” explained Fr. Kalscheur, who holds degrees from Georgetown University, the University of Michigan, the Weston Jesuit School of Theology and Columbia University. “I see this appointment in A&S as connecting with my background as both a student and a teacher in the Jesuit tradition. I always looked at legal education from a humanistic standpoint: For me, it’s about the question, ‘Who are you becoming as a person as you study the law?’
“The question in the wider BC community is, ‘How do we see our lives as teachers and scholars in a Jesuit institution?’ I view part of my role in A&S as helping to address that.”
Fr. Kalscheur’s activities at BC have included involvement in faculty conversations regarding engagement with the Catholic intellectual tradition, and service on the Law School Promotion and Tenure and Strategic Planning committees. He also served on the search committee that recommended appointment of current Law School Dean Vincent Rougeau.
“I’ve always been impressed by Greg’s thoughtful contributions to the conversations on the Catholic intellectual tradition, as we imagine the future of Boston College,” said Quigley. “Many former undergraduates from A&S who have gone on to BC Law have pointed to him as a great teacher and mentor. I expect A&S faculty and students will soon come to appreciate Greg’s gifts as well.”
