Neil Wolfman, an assistant professor of the practice in the Chemistry Department, is the 2018 Teacher of the Year, as chosen by the Boston College chapter of Alpha Sigma Nu, the honor society of Jesuit colleges and universities.
Wolfman began teaching General Chemistry at the University in 2000 as a part-time faculty member, after having worked in the pharmaceutical industry for 30 years, primarily researching autoimmune diseases and muscle regeneration. He holds a bachelor's degree from New York University and a doctoral degree from Cornell University.
Wolfman, who is described as "inspirational," works to develop in students the critical thinking and problem-solving skills that will serve them well throughout life, regardless of what career path they choose.
This is his second teaching award; he was honored by BC's Phi Beta Kappa chapter in 2015.
BC's Alpha Sigma Nu chapter also held its annual induction ceremony on March 18 in St. Ignatius Church.
Alpha Sigma Nu is the only honor society permitted to bear the name Jesuit. It recognizes students who distinguish themselves in scholarship, loyalty and service and encourages its members to a lifetime pursuit of intellectual development, deepening Ignatian spirituality, service to others, and a commitment to the core principles of Jesuit education.
