I teach and write about sociology, philosophy, and social theory. In my current project, I bring aspects of the philosophies of Hegel and Wittgenstein into dialogue to shed light on the tensions, pressures, and disjunctions of online communication about divisive social and political topics. I have written and edited volumes on the rise of authoritarian populism in the United States and on early Frankfurt School critical theory. I am especially interested in the bridges between philosophy and the human sciences, in particular, the why behind the how or the theory of truth behind the method of analysis. I am also a licensed couple and family therapist. My approach to clinical work is person-centered, systemic, and humanistic. I specialize in working with adults and couples to find solutions and mindful ways out of oppressive, painful patterns toward freer, fuller, and more authentic ways of being. I am also very active in the Erich Fromm Society of North America.
