Class of 2023
Professor Salisbury created an inviting classroom atmosphere and empowered us to think critically.
Hometown: Cambridge, MA
Concentration/major: Concentration in Marketing with a double major in Philosophy
Activities: BC Big Brothers Big Sisters, APPA Volunteers, Kairos, Undergraduate Government of Boston College (UGBC), Orientation Leader, and Student Admission Program (SAP).
Formative Experience at BC: My most formative experience at BC has been having the opportunity to lead a Kairos retreat. The retreat gave me the time and space to think about all the different relationships in my life. I got to form genuine connections with my peers. Kairos helped me learn how to find the good in everyone I come across.
Favorite class?: My favorite class has been Customer Research and Insights for Marketing Decisions with Professor Linda Salisbury. I really enjoyed the hands on approach of the class. I learned marketing research skills that I know will benefit me in my future career path. I also got the opportunity to work on a team with my classmates to research a potential opportunity for the company of our choice. Professor Salisbury created a inviting classroom atmosphere and empowered us to think critically.
BC in three words: Reflective, compassionate, and driven
Class of 2024
For me this class was the epitome of a BC education: great professors and very applicable subjects. This class was the reason that I decided to pursue an Accounting concentration because I enjoyed it so much.
Hometown: Houston, TX
Concentration/major: Concentrations in Finance and Accounting, minor in Managing for Social Impact and the Public Good
Activities: Women’s Club Basketball, Manager for the Women’s Varsity Basketball team, Investment Banking Association
Favorite class?: My favorite class so far at Boston College has been Financial Accounting. My professor (Ed Taylor) was extremely engaging and made the class fun even at 9am! I was able to see the usefulness of financial accounting beyond the class, and I know that the topics that we learned will follow me throughout my whole life. For me this class was the epitome of a BC education: great professors and very applicable subjects. This class was the reason that I decided to pursue an Accounting concentration because I enjoyed it so much.
BC in three words: Cohesive, fulfilling, lively
Class of 2023
Professor LaCombe continually reminds us that we can and should try to lead a life that we're genuinely in love with, and I'm forever grateful for this confidence she has instilled within me.
Hometown: Dallas, Texas, and Mexico City, MX
Concentration/major: Information Systems, Political Science, Film Studies (minor)
Activities: Gabelli Presidential Scholars Program, Fulton Leadership Society, Start@Shea, The New England Classic, CSOM Teaching Assistant, public health research
Formative Experience at BC: My most formative experience was studying abroad in Madrid, Spain, during Spring 2022. After receiving my U.S. citizenship in Fall 2019, I felt all the more grateful for this opportunity to reconnect with my Hispanic heritage alongside BC students who also wholeheartedly embraced my language and culture. I made some very beautiful, restorative memories that I'll cherish forever.
Favorite class? My favorite class at BC has been Business Law with Professor Wesner. Through his course, I learned how to become a better advocate by exercising empathy and cultivating meaningful relationships with others. During our in-class discussions, I noticed how he’d encourage us to dissolve our fears in voicing our truths while occasionally interjecting to point out someone’s new haircut or introduce two students to each other. To me, these events became a subtle reminder that, at the end of the day, we should try to ground ourselves in and recognize other people’s humanity, regardless of similarities or differences in our beliefs.
BC in three words: Home sweet home!
Class of 2023
Professor Tone Svetelj told me to look just outside of Higgins Hall where vibrant flowers of all colors flowed in the warm spring air, telling me that the present is always precious and passing. While I still maintain structure to my flow, after that day I stopped wasting time. If there is anything I want to do, I go for it.
Hometown: Cornwall-on-Hudson, NY
Concentration/major: Concentrations in Finance and Accounting
Activities: Consumer Insights Panel Lab Research Assistant, Carroll School of Management Peer Advisor, and Non-Profit Board Member, Communications Chair for AguaClara Reach
Formative Experience at BC: After one philosophy class I wanted clarification on the Confessions of Augustine by Saint Augustine of Hippo and my professor, Tone Svetelj, ended up giving me a thirty minute lecture on how one must go with the flow. He told me to look just outside of Higgins Hall where vibrant flowers of all colors flowed in the warm spring air, telling me that the present is always precious and passing. While I still maintain structure to my flow, after that day I stopped wasting time. If there is anything I want to do, I go for it.
Favorite class?: Organizational Behavior with Professor Jacob Brown. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the way people carried out their lives altered dramatically. Understanding the dynamics of a changing environment while living in the midst of many, our class worked in teams to analyze shifting organizational structures and how they could be improved during uncertain times. Emphasizing psychological safety and wellbeing all throughout that semester, this class reminded me to stop and look back once in a while and appreciate the process rather than stumble forward. To play off of this analogy, this class helped me walk with greater confidence.
BC in three words: Tranquil, charismatic, and serendipitous
Class of 2024
Professor Mary Ellen Carter revolutionized my BC experience. She introduced me to academic research...and is the first person I go to when I am unsure of a decision, and the first person to know when I receive good news.
Hometown: Hopedale, MA
Concentration/major: Accounting for Finance and Consulting, Business Analytics
Activities: Fulton Leadership Society, Student Admission Program, Consulting Academy
Formative Experience at BC: The Fulton Leadership Society helped me forge connections with upperclassmen who became like siblings on campus. They have pushed me to become a better version of myself: to understand what matters to me and to make my decisions intentionally, as a result. I have been presented with more opportunities at BC than I could ever hope to pursue, and my upperclassmen mentors have helped me sort through which of those opportunities best align with my own goals and values.
Favorite class?: Professor Stephanie Jernigan has been a favorite professor of mine from my first year on campus. She teaches many business analytics courses -- a discipline I knew little about until I arrived in her classroom for the first time. Her classes are organized, she is enthusiastic about the course content, and she pushes her students to master the material. She exemplifies the Carroll School of Management professor -- a subject matter expert who loves sharing her passion with students each day.
BC in three words: Friendly, driven, reflective

Samuel Hartzmark, a professor of finance, was quoted in a Fortune Magazine article about Gen Z investors seeking financial guidance from non-traditional sources, such as astrology and tarot cards, when day-trading. The Hillenbrand Family Faculty Fellow warned against falling for such fads when it comes to finances and explained that “the illusion of control” was likely why many people feel drawn to the unusual investment strategies.
The assistant professor of finance and colleagues received the Best Paper Award at the 2024 Fintech and Financial Institutions Research Conference for their paper, “Algorithmic Underwriting in High Risk Mortgage Markets.”

"We study the effectiveness of shareholder engagement, that is, shareholders communicating their views to management. When shareholders and management have different beliefs, each shareholder engages more effectively when other shareholders engage as well. A limited shareholder base can thus prevent effective engagement. However, a limited shareholder base naturally arises under heterogeneous beliefs because investors who most disagree with management do not become shareholders. Passive funds, which own the firm regardless of their beliefs, can counteract these effects and improve engagement. When shareholders' and management's preferences are strongly misaligned, shareholders' engagement decisions become substitutes and the role of ownership structure declines."
