REGULATORY RADAR - The Florida legislature has passed the Clean Waterways Act, which addresses water pollution in the state by expanding monitoring of water quality, regulation of biosolids, and shifting some pollution-related oversight to the State Department of Environmental Protection.

REGULATORY RADAR - New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy has signed a new food waste recycling law, which will require certain commercial and institutional entities to source-separate and recycle food waste.

REGULATORY RADAR - The Council of the European Union has adopted a classification system, or taxonomy, to provide companies and investors with a common framework for identifying environmentally sustainable business activities.

REGULATORY RADAR - At the end of May, the European Commission announced its adoption of a new biodiversity strategy, aimed at addressing biodiversity loss due to exploitation of natural resources and pollution.

REGULATORY RADAR - The California Air Resources Board, the state’s clean air regulator, has passed a new rule requiring more than half of the trucks sold in California to be zero-emissions by 2035.

REGULATORY RADAR - Canada’s federal government has released a strategic assessment of climate change that will be used as the basis for evaluating Canada’s adherence to its climate change commitments, such as the Paris Climate Accord.

REGULATORY RADAR - President Trump signed the bipartisan Great American Outdoors Act on August 4, 2020, guaranteeing funding for the protection of federal land in the United States.

REGULATORY RADAR - On August 27, 2020, the New Jersey legislature passed a new law requiring the state’s Department of Environmental Protection to identify environmentally “overburdened communities” and grant environmental permits only after a determination that the permitted activity will have no disproportionate, cumulative environmental impact on the community.

REGULATORY RADAR - The U.K. government has published plans to prohibit large business operating in the country from using products that were grown in areas that had been deforested illegally.

REGULATORY RADAR - California Gov. Gavin Newsom issued an executive order phasing out the sale of all gasoline powered vehicles in the state by 2035.

REGULATORY RADAR - Canadian Environment Minister Jonathan Wilkinson announced that the country plans to ban single-use plastics, such as plastic straws, cutlery, and checkout bags, by the end of 2021.
