Spotlight on You
Nazzic Keene, CEO of SAIC, has been honored by the Boy Scouts of America with its 2021 Technology Good Scout Award. The award will be presented to Keene by the National Capital Area Council (NCAC) of the Boy Scouts of America in recognition of her commitment to advancing the technology sector while exemplifying the values of the Boy Scouts of America. Keene joins a rich history of honorees who practice integrity and trustworthiness in their professional and civic lives, as well as being the first woman to be honored with this award.
Renee Rhem, vice president of customer advocacy at Subaru of America, Inc, has been named to the Subaru executive team. Rhem is the first African American woman to hold a C-Suite position at Subaru. Rhem joined Subaru as vice president of customer advocacy in 2020. Prior, she held positions in operations, sales support, and customer service, including roles at Prudential Financial, Independence Blue Cross, and Bank of America.
Katie Shay founded the Business and Human Rights (BHR) program at Cisco in 2019 and is responsible for growing this team. In honor of International Human Rights Day, she was featured in the company's blog series People Behind CSR at Cisco. "A lot of companies don’t have a BHR team. Because of Cisco’s commitment to social justice and our Global Human Rights Policy, adopted in 2012, we’ve been able to expand the team and dial in on a strategy for Cisco that advances human rights," said Shay. "We’re developing policies and processes so that our business partners can get faster analysis and answers on how human rights issues may impact their business decisions and how their business decisions may impact human rights."

Aramark has partnered with Lucas County Jail in Toledo, OH, to help prepare inmates for a job in the restaurant industry after they are released. Six inmates completed the program last week. “It is a chance for individuals to gain more knowledge in restaurant and kitchen basics,” said Bob Barr, the vice president of the east region of Aramark. “Anything that you what to learn while you are in the kitchen from, management, food management, that’s available through our Aramark In2Work program.”
Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota has partnered with local nonprofit news publication MinnPost to offer a one-year reporting fellowship that will focus on race and health equity in Minnesota. This is a new, full-time position that will cover the different ways poverty, discrimination, education, employment, transportation, housing and the environment affect health and health care among Minnesota’s BIPOC communities. In accordance with MinnPost’s code of ethics, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota will play no role in any news coverage decisions.
FedEx Corp. received its first five of an order of 500 electric Light Commercial Vehicles (eLCVs) from BrightDrop, the new electric delivery and logistics business from General Motors. The introduction of BrightDrop’s all-electric, zero-tailpipe emissions vehicles into the FedEx fleet is an important step in the company’s goal to take its global operations carbon neutral by 2040.
Fifth Third Bank’s community development lending and investments group has closed on more than $500 million in loans and investments in 2021. The financing provided for over 6,000 units of new and preserved housing for low- and moderate-income people, including families and seniors. In addition, over six loans and investments went to development projects that will provide jobs and services for communities in the Bank’s footprint. The Community Development Lending and Investments group focuses on benefiting low- to moderate-income communities and people by creating or preserving affordable housing, providing access to capital for small businesses and revitalizing distressed areas by investing in commercial buildings.
The FirstEnergy Foundation has granted surprise $5,000 "Gifts of the Season" to two local nonprofit agencies that are working to make lives better in communities within The Illuminating Company's service area. The recipients of this year's gifts are EDWINS Leadership & Restaurant Institute in Cleveland, Cuyahoga County, and HOLA Ohio in Painesville, Lake County—two organizations that provide support services to underserved and vulnerable individuals of all ages across the greater Cleveland area.
Kiddie Academy has donated $40,000 to Family Promise to fund a new training program and provide scholarships focused on helping women achieve career growth in early childhood education, in honor of its 40th anniversary. Kiddie Academy's contribution will help launch the Family Promise Leadership Academy in 2022 to offer training for staff at Family Promise affiliates that provide prevention, shelter and stabilization services to their respective communities.
Sempra Foundation has donated more than $350,000 to GRID Alternatives with the intent to advance energy access in California tribal communities by developing, financing and implementing solar power projects, as covered in the San Diego Times. The foundation will support the installation of around 200 kilowatts of solar capacity at single-family residences and apartment buildings at four reservations in San Diego County and Bishop, California, for more than 200 tribal members. The installations will be completed through the Tribal Solar Accelerator Fund, a tribal-led initiative that supports tribes in achieving their renewable energy goals.
Splunk released its 2021 Global Impact Report, which details the company’s approach and engagement with the societal and environmental issues that matter most to its stakeholders and business. The 2021 Global Impact Report outlines Splunk’s new Global Impact mission, guiding principles, and the company’s four-pillar Global Impact Strategy. The report reflects Splunk’s core belief that data and innovation can help solve seemingly intractable problems.
