Boston College began the new semester in a successful way by reaching the quarter-finals in novice at the 61st annual Crowe-Warken Debate Tournament held at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland during 18-20 January 2020.
A partial list of teams competing at the tournament included Army, Cornell, Dartmouth, Emory, Georgetown, Indiana University, Trinity (San Antonio), University of Michigan, and Wake Forest.
Cross Conrad, ’23 and Louis Gleason, IV, ’23 competing in novice compiled a 6-2 record during the preliminary rounds defeating teams from the University of Minnesota, University of Mary Washington, George Mason (twice), and Liberty (twice).
As the fourth seed, BC received a bye in the octo-finals, along with the other top three seeds from George Mason and two teams from Liberty.
In the quarter finals, BC faced the University of Kentucky and was locked on the negative side. Kentucky advocated plan to cooperate with Russia to remove space debris. Conrad & Gleason argued that cooperating with Russia would harm US-NATO relations and advocated a plan for the U.S. to unilaterally remove space debris. In a 2-1 decision, Kentucky prevailed over BC.
Conrad and Gleason also won individual speaker awards, with Gleason receiving 6th place honors and Conrad winning 10th place.
For the season, Conrad & Gleason have reached the elimination rounds at every tournament, including an octo-finals at West Point, quarter-finals at George Mason, and quarter-finals at the ADA Fall Championship at Wake Forest.
BC next travels to a debate tournament at Monmouth during February 7-9, 2020.
