Offerings for CSOM Students
All Carroll School of Management students, regardless of their area of concentration, are required to take Principles of Economics (ECON1101) and Statistics (OPER1135) as part of the CSOM Core. Students entering Boston College as freshmen take the Principles course in the College of Arts and Sciences. Please consult the University website for advanced placement policies and qualifying scores.
CSOM students must also complete two Social Science Core courses. Principles of Economics (ECON1101) counts as one such course. The Economics Department also accepts qualifying AP credit for Microeconomics Principles and/or Macroeconomics Pronciples as one course (each) towards the Social Science Core. If a student does not have any qualifying Social Science AP credit, they will need to take one other qualifying Social Science Core course.
In addition, students from the Carroll School of Management may choose Economics as an area of concentration. Students with a serious interest in Economics are encouraged to fulfill all the requirements of the Arts and Sciences major.
Four courses beyond the CSOM Core are required for the concentration (a minimum of 19 credit hours overall):
- Intermediate Theory Courses
- Microeconomic Theory (ECON2201 or ECON2203)
- Macroeconomic Theory (ECON2202 or ECON2204)
- Elective Courses
- Two electives chosen from ECON2205 through ECON3399, except ECON3345 and ECON3380
At least one of those courses must be chosen from ECON3300-ECON3399 (except ECON3336, ECON3345, ECON3380).
- Two electives chosen from ECON2205 through ECON3399, except ECON3345 and ECON3380
ECON2201 and ECON2202 have a prerequisite of one semester of calculus, which is fulfilled by the University's math core requirement for CSOM students.
ECON2203 and ECON2204 have additional prerequisites. CSOM Honors Program students who wish to take these courses should read the information provided in the description of the Economics Major.
At least one of the Intermediate Theory courses must be completed by the end of the junior year.
Students must complete the Principles course before taking either Intermediate Theory course. With the exception of ECON 2211 Math for Economic Analysis, students should complete at least one Intermediate Theory course before beginning the electives. We recognize that scheduling constraints may make this difficult. Students who need to take an elective before completing an Intermediate Theory course should register for a 2000-level elective that has only Principles as a prerequisite. It is also possible, with permission of the professor, to take a 3000-level elective concurrently with its Intermediate Theory prerequisite.
General Department policy is that students take both Intermediate Theory courses and at least one of the two electives in the College of Arts and Sciences. The remaining course may, subject to Department approval of the specific course, be taken during the summer session at Boston College or another institution, during the academic year as part of a study-abroad program, or during the academic year through the Woods College of Advancing Studies. Students who plan to take an elective course abroad must meet the Department's qualifications for study abroad. They must have completed both Principles courses and at least one of the Intermediate Theory courses with a minimum grade of B- in that course prior to foreign study. Students who want to study abroad must contact the Office of International Programs to apply for study abroad and to plan their semester or year abroad. Transfer students should meet with the Director of Undergraduate Studies in the Economics Department to discuss their specific situations.

Normally, students will have completed both Principles courses before taking either Intermediate Theory course, although we will allow students who have finished one Principles course to take the associated Intermediate Theory course concurrently with the second Principles course. For example, a student who has completed ECON1131 may take ECON2201 concurrently with ECON1132. Students should complete at least one Intermediate Theory course before beginning the electives, although we recognize that scheduling constraints may make this difficult.
