This year's recipient of the Women’s and Gender Studies’ Janet James Award is Meredith Hawkins, Class of ‘20, whose winning paper is entitled “Defiled and Displaced: A Meta-Analysis of Psychosocial Interventions for Refugee Women Survivors of Gender-Based Violence.”
On her experience with the WGS Program, Meredith says, “I entered college with a very narrow understanding of feminism. It was through programs like the Vagina Monologues and guest lectures from Sonya Renee Taylor and Peggy Ornstein that helped broaden my understanding of the societal construction of gender, the intersectionality of feminism, and the inherent binaries of masculinity and femininity upon which our patriarchal, capitalistic society thrives. I would not have arrived at this place of academic curiosity, professional trajectory, or human empathy without the courage, skills, and voice your program has helped to illuminate.”
Following graduation, Meredith will pursue a career in social work through her acceptance into the BC SSW Class of 2023. Please join us in congratulating Meredith on her accomplishments!
