Fulton Debate wins the University of Miami Tournament

Boston College won the junior varsity division of the Hurricane Debate Tournament held at the University of Miami in Coral Gables, Florida during January 3-6, 2018.

A partial list of schools competing at Miami included Central Florida, Emory, Florida State, Navy, University of Georgia, Trinity (San Antonio), University of Mary Washington, and the University of Michigan. Competing for Boston College in Miami were Ben Dewhurst’21 & Nicholas Wong’20. During the preliminary debates, Dewhurst & Wong compiled a record of 5-1 earning them a 2 nd place seed team going into the elimination rounds. Their only loss was to Central Florida during round one.

In the semi-finals, Dewhurst & Wong debating on the affirmative defeated Florida States in a 3-0 decision. That set up a re-match against Central Florida who went 6-0 during the preliminary debates.

In the final round, Boston College was locked negative. Debating on the affirmative, Central Florida cheated and did not advocate a topical plan to establish national health insurance. In a 3-0 decision, Boston College defeated Central Florida to claim the championship. Boston College debaters also earned individual speaker honors. Ben Dewhurst won top speaker honors and Nick Wong received a 5 th place speaker award.
