Boston College captured first and second place at the Junior Varsity division of the Northeast Regional Championship hosted on-line by The New School during February 26-28, 2021.
A partial list of teams competing in the tournament included California State (Fullerton), California State (Long Beach), Cornell, James Madison, The New School, New York University, West Virginia and West Point.
Boston College competed two teams in the Northeast Regionals: Sophia Carter,’22 & Anderson Zhang’23 and Cross Conrad’23 & Louis Gleason, IV’23.
During the preliminary rounds, Carter & Zhang achieved a 5-1 record defeating teams from the New School (two teams), West Point, California State (Fullerton), and New York University.
Conrad & Gleason earned a 4-2 record defeating team from New York University (two teams), California State (Fullerton), and The New School.
In the semi-finals, Carter & Zhang, as the top ranked team, faced the 4th seed from NYU. BC was locked negative because they earlier had debated and lost to NYU in the preliminary rounds on the affirmative. In a reversal of fortune, BC defeated NYU in a 2-1 decision.
In the other semi-finals, Conrad & Gleason (3rd seed) were locked on the negative against West Point (2nd seed). They had lost to West Point on the affirmative in the preliminary rounds. This time, BC routed West Point in a 3-0 decision.
With BC winning both semi-final debates, the tournament ended without the need for a final round.
Fulton Debate also dominated the competition for individual speaker awards. Sophie Carter won top speaker honors, Anderson Zhang won second place, and Cross Conrad placed tenth.
Next week, Fulton Debate will compete at the ADA Nationals Tournament hosted on-line by the University of Minnesota.
