Boston College advanced three teams to the elimination rounds at the 51st annual West Point debate tournament held during 28-30 October 2017.
A partial list of schools competing at West Point, included Army, Dartmouth, George Mason, James Madison, New York University, Rutgers, the University of Rochester, and the University of Washington.
In the varsity division, Alec Navori, ‘21 & Noah Valdez, ’21 reached the quarter-finals. During the preliminary rounds, Navori & Valdez were 5-3 defeating teams from Army, James Madison, New York University, the University of Florida, and the University of Rochester.
In the octa-finals, Navori & Valdez defeated the University of Rochester in a 3-0 decision. In the quarter finals, Navori & Valdez were defeated in a 2-1 decision by Liberty.
Conner Coles, ’20 & Jenna Bilak, ’19 also debating in varsity were 5-3 during the preliminary rounds defeating Rutgers, Monmouth, New York University, George Mason, and James Madison. In the octa finals, Coles & Bilak lost to the University of Florida.
In the novice division, Eva Ottum, ’20 & Daniel Moyer, ’20 advanced to the semi-finals. During the preliminary rounds, Ottum & Moyer were 6-2 and received a bye into the quarter finals, where they defeated George Mason in a 3-0 decision. In the semi-finals, Ottum & Moyer, debating on the affirmative, were defeated by Liberty in a split decision.
Eva Ottum also received 9th place speaker honors in the novice division.
