Hispanic Studies minor and Neuroscience major, Julia Spiegel (MCAS Class of 2022), has been awarded a BC Advanced Study Grant for the summer of 2021 in conjunction with an internship at Boston's Dana Farber Cancer Institute.
Julia will be analyzing the DFCI data on ovarian cancer, looking for trends in race, ethnicity, and socioeconomic status. She will use her grant and her skills in Spanish to parse out Hispanic cancer patients in her data analysis, in hopes of determining if, as she hypothesizes, cultural and linguistic factors are at least partially responsible for the fact that latinas are 20% more likely to die of gynecological cancers than other population groups. Her research will not only advance Julia's professional formation but will also benefit her research team at Dana Farber. Congratulations, Julia!
