Now that we’re halfway through the fall semester, we spoke with some first-year full-time students about their first quarter at BC. Here are some of their reflections.

What has been your favorite class so far?

Tyler Lin (MBA ’26): My favorite class so far has been Marketing. Coming from an engineering background, I initially held a stereotypical view of marketing as something purely promotional or sales-driven, and not as something rooted in data or strategy. However, the course and the professor have shown me the strategic depth involved in analyzing consumer behaviors, interpreting market trends, and solving complex problems.

As I progressed in the course, I realized how much overlap there is with engineering—both fields require analytical thinking, structured problem-solving, and mental adaptability. It’s a field I now view with newfound respect and interest as I hope to incorporate my learnings into a career in product management.

Huy Dang (MBA ’26): I was surprised by how much I enjoyed Accounting. The material was challenging and demanded significant study time, yet it felt practical. It gave me clearer insights into how businesses work, sparking a deeper interest in financial analysis and decision-making.

Professor Bradshaw was outstanding. He ensured everyone understood the material, taking time to address questions and clarify concepts—always with humor. His approach made complex topics accessible and kept the class engaged throughout.

What is your favorite memory from the first quarter?

Nicole Elbeery (MBA ’26): My favorite memory so far is from one of the football games. When it started raining, a bunch of us decided to leave, and we trekked to the T stop, getting soaked along the way. We piled onto the T and headed to Cityside Tavern, and even with around 20 of us, we somehow snagged a table. We ordered dinner and watched the rest of the game indoors!

Lily Crossman-Sexton (MBA/MSW ’26): My favorite memory from this first quarter has to be when a group of friends surprised me after our Accounting class on my birthday with a cake. It was so thoughtful and speaks to the kind of people at Boston College!

Any advice for next year’s incoming first-year students?

Matthew Semple (MBA ’26): Recruiting for internships starts fast. Prepping for networking, interviews, and applications early will make the academic side of things go a lot smoother.

Nicole Elbeery: Don’t be afraid to speak up! The first week of classes I felt nervous to ask a question or give my opinion. What if I’m wrong? What if I misspeak? I quickly got over that and it’s helped me feel not only more confident in myself, but also realize that it’s good to have questions and a difference of opinion.

Lily Crossman-Sexton: Reach out to second-year MBAs from the get-go. The current second years have been such a great resource for everything related to coursework, academic planning, summer internships, and social events—and I know our class will be excited to do the same for next year’s cohort.
