Dear Boston College Students,

As you learned from the President's letter to the BC Community earlier today, the University has made the difficult decision to suspend in-person classes and transition to online/remote instruction through the end of the semester. We recognize that this is an extraordinary disruption of the academic enterprise; however, we feel that it is the best way to minimize the risk of spreading the Coronavirus within the campus community.

Fortunately, as of this writing, we have no known cases of the Coronavirus at Boston College.

As we transition to online instruction, here is what you need to know:

  • Effective after this evening's classes, Wednesday, March 11, in-person instruction at all BC campus locations is suspended.
  • The Dean's office in each school will be prepared to provide guidance with regard to coursework and other academic matters. Instructors will communicate with their students how their specific class will proceed in an online environment. Online instruction will begin on Thursday, March 19.
  • Students should begin packing as soon as possible, with the requirement that you vacate your residence hall room by Sunday, March 15 at 9:00 p.m. Residential Life will communicate a schedule for "move out" to all students later today and work with students to make their transition as smooth as possible. The University has partnered with a local moving company to provide temporary storage and shipping for those who can't easily get their belongings home. Students should make sure to take any items they will need to complete their online coursework remotely.
  • Students with extenuating circumstances that prevent them from returning home, including international students who cannot return to their home countries/regions because of international travel restrictions, serious personal reasons, or University obligations, can apply for an exemption through through Residential Life. Exceptions will be granted on a case-by-case basis.
  • Those students who are approved to stay on campus will have access to residence halls, as well as libraries, University Health Services and dining halls, albeit with the possibility of reduced hours and staffing. Any changes in hours of these facilities will be communicated via email.

We will be communicating as far in advance as we can regarding significant events such as Senior Week and University Commencement.

We realize that these measures are disruptive, and stressful. Let me assure you that we have taken them because we believe they are the best way to protect the health and wellbeing of the campus community.

We will continue to provide regular updates on our COVID-19 response. Please visit our website www.bc.edu/coronavirus. You will also find contact information for specific questions you may have.

Thank you for your patience and understanding as we continue to work through the many logistics of preparing for a smooth transition from our normal operations.

Sincerely,

Joy Moore

Vice President for Student Affairs
