McManus Award presented to John Baldovin, S.J.

Clough School of Theology and Ministry professor honored for significant contributions to furthering liturgical renewal in the United States

John F. Baldovin, S.J., a professor of historical and liturgical history at Boston College’s Clough School of Theology and Ministry, was honored with 2024 Frederick R. McManus Award in recognition of his significant contributions to furthering liturgical renewal in the United States. The award is given by the Federation of Diocesan Liturgical Commissions and was presented to Fr. Baldovin at the organization’s annual meeting earlier this month in Pittsburgh.

Clough School of Theology and Ministry Professor John Baldovin, S.J., (center) is the 2024 recipient of the Frederick R. McManus Award.

An expert in the history and theology of the liturgy, sacramental theology, and the theology of ordained and lay ministry, Fr. Baldovin is the author of numerous books, notably the award-winning book Reforming the Liturgy: A Response to the Critics. His articles on liturgy have been published in Worship, Theological Studies, America, and Commonweal. His writing has been translated into French, German, Spanish, Italian, Japanese, and Albanian.

In 2021, he received the National Association of Pastoral Musicians’ 2021 Jubilate Deo Award, given in recognition of his substantial contribution to the development of pastoral liturgy in the U.S. He also has received the Berakah Award from the North American Academy of Liturgy.

He is past president of the International Jungmann Society for Jesuits and the Liturgy, the North American Academy of Liturgy, and the international ecumenical Societas Liturgica.

Since 1970, the Federation of Diocesan Liturgical Commissions has served the clergy and faithful of the dioceses of the U.S. by providing leadership, scholarship, and resources to aid in the authentic implementation and celebration of the liturgy.
