BC Athletics suspends Swimming and Diving teams indefinitely following hazing allegation

Boston College Athletics has suspended the activities of the men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams following “credible reports of hazing,” according to a University statement issued on September 21.

“Based on the information known at this time,” the statement reads, “Athletics has determined a program suspension is warranted, pending a full investigation by the University.

“Consistent with University policy, the matter will be investigated by the Office of the Dean of Students and adjudicated fairly and impartially through the student conduct process. Once the investigation and adjudication process is complete, Athletics will reassess the status of the teams.”

According to the Boston College Student Code of Conduct, “Hazing refers to any activity or abuse of power by a member of an organization and/or group used against an individual as a condition to affiliate with, hold membership or join (or to maintain full status in a group) that humiliates, degrades or risks emotional and/or physical harm, regardless of the student’s willingness to participate.”

As a matter of policy, the University does not discuss student conduct matters.

The men and women’s swim and diving teams were scheduled to open their 2023 season against George Washington University on October 7.
