Sherburne Hawkins co-authors study on impact of tobacco control on birth defects

Associate Professor Summer Sherburne Hawkins co-authored “Impact of state tobacco control policies on birth defects” with BC Economics Professor Kit Baum in Preventive Medicine and “Cross-national Comparison Examining Breastfeeding and Child Malnutrition Among Mexicans” with doctoral candidate Ana Paola Campos in Current Developments in Nutrition.

She presented the latter study at the American Society of Nutrition’s Nutrition 2019 conference, and she was also invited to present her research with Assistant Professor Erika Sabbath and Baum on the relationship between state-level policy changes and such outcomes as workplace homicide and maternal mortality at the Nordic and Baltic Stata Users Group Meeting in Sweden, the London Stata Conference, and the International Conference on Economic Modeling and Data Science in Portugal. Hawkins received an American Lung Association Public Policy Research Award for her research on the outcomes of tobacco control and air quality policies, and she was appointed Section Editor for Health Policies, Systems, and Management in High-Income Countries at BMC Public Health.
