Founded in 2000, the Institute for the Study and Promotion of Race & Culture (ISPRC) at Boston College hosts an annual national conference to address a racial or cultural issue that could “benefit from a pragmatic, scholarly, or grassroots focus.”

The 2019 Diversity Challenge, the institute’s 19th annual conference, is described as, “an interdisciplinary forum in which researchers, mental health practitioners, social activists, educators, and government officials explore issues and interact with each other to address mutual concerns related to race, ethnic culture, and surviving, resisting, and healing in our current political and social climate.” Scholars, students, and practitioners from across the country will share their research and experiences.

Four BCSSW MSW students will lead structured discussions on October 26. Abaigeal Doherty, MSW ’20, and Takia Myers, MSW ’20, will lead a discussion titled An Intervention for Confronting Present Day Symptoms of White Supremacist Systems: Invalidated Racial-Ethnic Trauma and the Egregious Violence of White Heterosexual Male Privilege (WHMP) from 9:30–11:00 a.m. And Ryan McElhose, MSW ’20, and Nicole Abeleda, MSW ’20, will lead a discussion about how to enhance the academic experience for LGBTQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer) students of color from 2:00–3:30 p.m. titled QTPoC (Queer & Trans People of Color): Decolonizing Higher Education.
