Fulton Debate advances to semi-finals at Liberty

Boston College advanced to the semi-finals in the junior varsity division at the annual Liberty University debate tournament held in Lynchburg, Virginia during 3-5 November 2017.

A partial list of schools competing at Liberty included Army, Georgetown, George Mason, James Madison, Navy, Rutgers, the University of Florida, the University of Georgia, the University of Pittsburgh, and Wake Forest.

Debating in junior varsity, Ben Dewhurst, ’21 & Nick Wong, ’20 were 4-2 during the preliminary rounds defeating teams from Army, George Mason (twice), and Liberty. As the 5th seeded team, they received a bye in the octo-finals. 

In the quarter-finals, Dewhurst & Wong met the 4th seed from Liberty, who had defeated them in the preliminary rounds.  However, this time, debating on the affirmative, BC defeated Liberty in a 3-0 decision.

In the semi-finals, Dewhurst & Wong faced the top seed from the University of Florida.  Debating on the negative, they lost in a 2-1 decision.

Debating in novice, Dan Moyer ’20 & Jane Wu ’20 reached the octo-finals. During the preliminary rounds, Moyer & Wu were 4-2 defeating teams from Navy (twice), the University of Mary Washington, and George Mason.

In the octo-finals Moyer & Wu debating on the affirmative lost to Binghamton in a unanimous decision.

Fulton debaters also received individual speaker honors  Dan Moyer received a 4th place speaker award in novice and Ben Dewhurst won a 8th place award in junior varsity.
