How to Enroll in a Capstone

It's easy to enroll in a Capstone and a few helpful hints make it easier. First, keep in mind that even with the variety of course topics, every Capstone does the same thing, helps you review your education and helps you preview lifelong commitments to work, relationships, society, and spirituality. So even if the course topic you wanted isn't available, every seminar will help you with your personal development. Also remember you're allowed to take up to 5 Capstone credits at Boston College.

How do you enroll? Every Capstone seminar is listed under UNCP and some are cross-listed in the home departments of the professors. As such, some seats in each course are assigned to the UNCP listing, while some might be assigned to the department listing. Try both.

What if you can't get in? Capstone instructors may keep a waitlist. Some instructors reserve a small number of seats for students who are eager or have a later registration time. Simply email the professor of the section you are interested in taking to explain your enthusiasm for the topic and you may be in luck.

Rules and Policies

  • Capstone is open only to seniors.
  • You cannot opt to take Capstone Pass/Fail.
  • The University allows students to take up to 5 Capstone credits, whether under UNCP or the department number. This policy is to assure that we are offering this unique opportunity to as many students that are interested. Registrations will be audited at the end of the Drop/Add period of each semester, assuring that no one is taking more that the 5-credit limit. If it is discovered that you are enrolled in more than 5 Capstone credits, we must remove a Capstone course from your record which could result in you being short credits to graduate.
  • If a Capstone is cross-listed in the professor's home department (e.g., Philosophy, Communication, English, Theology, Economics, Sociology), it usually counts as an elective toward the major. Please check before the start of the semester to make sure if you need these credits for your major/minor.
