The Pop-up Globe is the world’s first full-scale working replica of the London Shakespearean theatre.
Sydney-born actor Chris Huntly-Turner, who is part of the all-male King’s Company, plays Le Beau in As You Like It and the title character in Henry V, a role he is thrilled to be portraying in the famous “wooden O” that Shakespeare mentions in the prologue.
“To have the honour of playing one of Shakespeare’s greatest characters in the place that he was meant to be discussed and meant to be portrayed is a huge honour and something I never thought I’d get the chance to do as just a bloke from Sydney,” says Huntly-Turner.
The 28-year-old, who studied at London’s Royal Central School of Speech & Drama, says he and his fellow actors revel in the opportunity to build a relationship with 900 different people every night and take them on a journey — physically, emotionally and historically.
“It’s a theatre that enables people to be spoken to, it’s built to bring people along on the journey with you,” he says, adding that the audience, which is no more than 15m from the action at any given time, gets to “literally ride the highs and lows, laughs and tears, blood and heartache” as they unfold before them.
