Mary Armstrong is a painter who divides her time between Georgetown, ME and Newton, MA. She has taught painting at Boston College since 1989. She received her BFA from Boston University. In 1977 she was awarded a Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture scholarship. Since 1985 she has shown her paintings and drawings at Victoria Munroe Gallery in New York and Boston, The Orsman Gallery at Smith College in Northampton, The Portland Museum of Art, and The Maine Center for Contemporary Art. She has also participated in exhibitions in California, Connecticut, Florida, Pennsylvania, and Rhode Island. Armstrong has received numerous honors and awards including, in 1995, a fellowship from The Bllinglen Arts Foundation, Ballycastle, North County Mayo, Ireland, and a grant for works on paper from The New England Foundation for The Arts. In 1980 she received a grant for works on paper from the Massachusetts Artists Foundation. In 1979 and 1980, she was awarded two consecutive fellowships from The Fine Arts Work center in Provincetown.
Since 2006 Armstrong has had three solo shows at Victoria Munroe Fine Art Gallery in Boston. Between 1985 and 1993, she had four solo shows at The Victoria Munroe Gallery in New York. In 1991-1992 she was given a ten-year retrospective at The Felecita Foundation in Escondido California.
Armstrong has participated in numerous group exhibitions, including The Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston, Decordova Museum in Lincoln, MA, and The Portland Museum, Portand, ME.
