MSF students at Cambrige Associates in Boston
Assistant Director of Career Development Gloria Choi talks about organizing an employer trek to Cambridge Associates in Boston this spring, and Albert Hu (MSF ’23) and Kai Wang (MSF ’23) share what they learned from this experience.
Why did you choose Cambridge Associates for this trek?
Gloria Choi (GC): Cambridge Associates is a local employer that has hired multiple BC MSF alumni in recent years. When I reached out to the alum who I had worked with as a student, he was very eager to help make the trek happen. With the help of several BC alumni and the campus recruiter, the MSF students had the opportunity to learn more about the firm and make in-person connections.
How often do you do these treks?
GC: We were unable to do these treks the past couple of years due to the pandemic, so our plan is to ramp up in-person MSF employer treks in the coming semesters. We’ll be scheduling more treks this fall and hope to involve alumni at firms whose busy season is in the spring.
What do you hope BC students gain through these treks?
GC: My hope is that BC students can gain practice on how to network, especially with alumni, as well as gain deeper knowledge of how different firms operate. The ideal goal is that these events will lead to some post-graduation job opportunities for students.
What are some future treks on the horizon?
GC: I plan to reconnect with MSF alumni at McKinsey, EY, and Glenvale Solar to coordinate treks for Fall 2023 and Spring 2024.
What did you learn by attending the trek?
Kai Wang (KW): I learned about the firm and its many different functions. I found it interesting that Cambridge Associates established the benchmark base of the private equity industry and I’m glad to broaden my perspective by getting to know the company first hand.
Albert Hu (AH): I also learned about the different departments and functions within the company and the daily responsibilities and processes of analysts. It was also great to gain insights into the company's target client bases and business model.
Would you recommend other students to attend employer treks like this if given the opportunity?
KW: Yes, definitely. I was able to engage and connect with most of the presenters, who were BC alumni. It was good to have face-to-face interaction.
AH: Absolutely! I would highly recommend attending employer treks such as this one if given the opportunity. Networking is crucial in finance, and you never know how your connections may help advance your career.
