Q & A with Caroline Davis, Associate Dean, Office of the Dean of Students, Student Support
What is your role and what most inspires you in your position working with students?
Our office welcomes all students and ensures their access to the resources they need to enhance their education and thrive at Boston College. I love being there for students when they aren't sure where to go, and connecting them with the right resources to help them succeed. I oversee the students of concern system for the University and our Disability Services Office. I meet with students to offer assistance and support when they are having a difficult time, am a sounding board to provide perspective about their concerns, and to connect them to resources both on and off campus. I also serve as a consultant to staff, faculty, students, and families who are worried about a student.
What are some things that parents can do to support their students during midterms and final exams?
Parents play a key role in normalizing stress, but also in watching out for significant concerns. It is important to remind students that self-care is critical and they don't have to be perfect. So many of our students are used to academics coming to them easily, but in college navigating academic rigor is only a part of the daily experience. They are also managing their schedules, meals, joining clubs, maintaining relationships—and maybe even doing some laundry! It can be overwhelming, so it’s key to remind your students that they don't have to do it all perfectly. There are resources on campus to support them, and they are never alone. If you are worried about your student, or not sure where to go with your concerns, please don't hesitate to reach out to our office.
What is the BCaring Campaign and how does it enhance students' BC experience?
The Dean of Students Office is committed to helping the BC community consider how we care for each other and ourselves—particularly in times of conflict or disagreement, but also more broadly. Our BCaring Campaign asks our students, staff, and faculty to share efforts to foster mutual care, so we can in turn share these messages of care with the community. We work to cultivate and highlight care for one another as a key part of being a member of the BC community.
