The Center for Ignatian Spirituality at Boston College was founded in 1998, the result of a generous gift of $2 million from the Jesuit Community, which is to be matched by the University. The Center serves as a resource to explore and enhance the ethical and religious environment of the University.
The Mission of the Center
- To communicate to members of the Boston College community the vision and history of the University's Jesuit mission and the spirituality of St. Ignatius Loyola which is the foundation of that mission. With other members of the University community, we pay particular attention to serving the critical importance of the integration of the intellectual, social, and religious formation of our students, and to the University's commitment to uniting academic achievement with the service of faith and the promotion of justice;
- To assist members of the University community, especially faculty and administrators, to reflect on and understand more deeply the meaning of our Jesuit mission, and to help integrate that vision in their own areas of responsibility at Boston College;
- To make available the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius Loyola in appropriate forms to faculty, administrators, and staff, and to support individuals and groups in their own spiritual journey: through retreats, one-on-one conversations, and spiritual direction, workshops, lectures, and discussion groups;
- To serve as a resource for the University community in promoting conversation about the Jesuit mission and its relationship with culture and with other religious traditions, thus enhancing the human and religious environment of Boston College; and,
- To offer the resources of the Center to other Jesuit schools and universities, and to dialogue with and learn from their experiences.
