In the aftermath of the events of January 6, 2021, in Washington, D.C., Boston College President William P. Leahy, S.J., has issued the following statement condemning the affront on democracy and calling for adherence to the nation's democratic principles:
"The actions of Trump supporters in and around the Capitol on January 6 were shameful, unacceptable, and in conflict with the rule of law and democratic principles that have long animated the United States.
The orderly transition of power is a central tenet of our political system and essential to our democracy. We need to reaffirm our commitment to the beliefs and values that have guided our democratic process since our nation's founding."
Also today, Father Leahy joined the presidents of Jesuit colleges and universities in the United States in signing a statement calling for an end to violence.
