Core Curriculum
Through the Boston College Core Curriculum, undergraduates acquire a common intellectual foundation. They experience an intensive grounding in the defining works of the humanities, natural sciences, and social sciences, introducing them to the forces that have shaped world history and culture. This focus broadens students’ intellectual horizons while shaping their characters and helping them learn how to discern well—preparing them for meaningful lives and rewarding careers.
Living and Learning Communities
The University Core Curriculum sponsors two Living and Learning Communities (LLCs) for first-year MCAS students who wish to extend the conversations of their courses beyond the classroom.
The Justice and the Common Good LLC is a residential community for first-year MCAS students who would like to deepen their interests in social justice, cultural diversity, and the common good. Students live in Gonzaga Hall on Upper Campus and take both Complex Problem courses and First-Year Topic Seminars taught by faculty who serve as students’ academic advisors. Year-long activities include service projects, a faculty speaker series, and a near-to-peer mentorship program. Interested students should complete the Justice and the Common Good LLC Supplemental Housing Application in addition to the New Student Housing Application. The Perspectives LLC offers first-year MCAS students enrolled in Perspectives on Western Culture (PHIL/THEO1090-91) the opportunity to join a residential community that promotes ongoing conversations with classmates and faculty. Students are housed in Duchesne Hall on Newton Campus. Senior class mentors and events with faculty and fellow residents build a transformative first-year experience.
