More than 30 Lynch School Counseling, Developmental, and Educational Psychology faculty and graduate students presented at the 116th Annual Convention of the American Psychological Association (APA) held in August 2008 in Boston, MA. The APA is a scientific and professional organization that represents psychology in the United States. With 148,000 members, APA is the largest association of psychologists worldwide.
The Lynch School hosted a reception on August 14 to honor incoming Division 17 President Janet Helms, a member of the Counseling, Developmental, and Educational Psychology Department. A number of Lynch School faculty members received awards during the conference, including Janet Helms, recipient of the 2008 Award for Distinguished Contributions to Research in Public Policy; Counseling, Developmental, and Educational Psychology faculty member and Associate Dean of Faculty and Academic Affairs Maureen Kenny, recipient of the 2007-8 Outstanding Contribution Award in The Counseling Psychologist; and Paul Poteat, newly appointed Assistant Professor in the Counseling, Developmental, and Educational Psychology Department, recipient of both the Barbara A. Kirk Award for Outstanding Graduate Student Research and the Council of Counseling Psychology Training Programs Outstanding Graduate Student Award. Both awards were given in recognition of work completed for his doctoral degree. In addition, graduate student Maryam Jernigan received the 2008 Award for Distinguished Doctoral Student in Professional Psychology.
