Professor Deese researches the international dimensions of political economic reform in developing, resource based states and the Middle East region in particular; leadership of international bargaining and negotiations; and the interaction of economics and security in US foreign policy.

He teaches graduate courses on the roles and design of institutions in international politics, and on the political economy of reform in developing states, and undergraduate courses on international political economy, liberalism and American foreign policy, and the US and global politics of energy policy.
